Fed: New year revellers should check Y2K status of buildings

CANBERRA, Dec 20 AAP - People planning to visit a high rise building on New Year's
Eve should check its Y2K status first, the federal government said today.

Communications parliamentary secretary Ian Campbell said while there was no reason
why the millennium bug should affect New Year's Eve plans, it was best to check access
arrangements for big buildings.

"People planning to gain access to high rise buildings on New Year's Eve should check
the status of the building with the owner or manager," Senator Campbell said in a statement.

"Risk of failure of systems such as those used to operate large buildings or control
access, security or air conditioning is almost certainly low."

But many building managers had chosen to restrict access to buildings over the period
or limit access until checks were done, he said.

"I commend building owners and managers who are taking their responsibilities seriously
and urge people who may be using high rise buildings on New Year's Eve to check first
with the building manager."
