NSW: Premier rejects calls for driver re-testing

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR says imposing ongoing tests on the state's drivers
will not improve road safety.

NSW Police Commissioner KEN MORONEY says driver abilities should be periodically re-tested
to lower the incidence of road fatalities and accidents across the state.

But Mr CARR says 75 per cent of drivers have no demerit points on their licence.

The NSW Opposition says re-testing will unfairly punish good drivers and is calling
for a more visible police presence on the road instead.

Mr CARR also says he supports discussion on imposing a night curfew on young drivers.
