QLD: Skateboarder in hospital

A young boy suffered head injuries when he lost control of his skateboard in the south
west Queensland town of Stanthorpe yesterday.

An RACQ CareFlight rescue helicopter spokesman says nine-year-old JORDAN BROWNING was
flown to Brisbane's Mater Children's Hospital and admitted to intensive care.

He's now in a stable condition, and is expected to be released from hospital tomorrow.

His mother HAZEL says JORDAN was trying out Stanthorpe's new skateboard rink when the
accident occurred.

She says JORDAN was wearing a helmet, but it became dislodged.

SYDNEY, Feb 22 AAP - Sacked Hunter Valley textiles workers will receive 100 per cent

Workers on the picketline at the Rutherford plant were ecstatic when AAP broke the
news just after midday.

"We've won!" worker David Evans shouted.

"That is the best news - we're going to get all our money.

Fed: New year revellers should check Y2K status of buildings

Fed: New year revellers should check Y2K status of buildings

CANBERRA, Dec 20 AAP - People planning to visit a high rise building on New Year's
Eve should check its Y2K status first, the federal government said today.

Communications parliamentary secretary Ian Campbell said while there was no reason
why the millennium bug should affect New Year's Eve plans, it was best to check access
arrangements for big buildings.

"People planning to gain access to high rise buildings on New Year's Eve should check
the status of the building with the owner or manager," Senator Campbell said in a statement.

"Risk of failure of systems such as those used to operate large buildings or control
access, security or air conditioning is almost certainly low."

But many building managers had chosen to restrict access to buildings over the period
or limit access until checks were done, he said.

"I commend building owners and managers who are taking their responsibilities seriously
and urge people who may be using high rise buildings on New Year's Eve to check first
with the building manager."

VIC: Petrol price vigilance required from autoclubs and ACCC

VIC: Petrol price vigilance required from autoclubs and ACCC

MELBOURNE, Aug 8 AAP - Responsibility for monitoring petrol prices for possible
profiteering lay with Australia's auto clubs as well as with the national consumer watchdog,
the RACV said today.

"The RACV would expect the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) to keep an
eye on profiteering in Australia," RACV spokesman David Cumming said.

But he said it was also up to auto clubs such as the RACV to highlight examples of
suspected profiteering.

To that end, petrol prices at 100 outlets across Australia were monitored weekly, with
results coming in each Friday, Mr Cumming told AAP.

Analysis of last week's prices - which in all but one capital city shot above 80 cents a
litre, before dropping back slightly in the face of competitive forces and public outcry -
would therefore take one to two weeks.

While wholesale prices were behind the general increase, the RACV suspected some
profiteering had occurred in metropolitan Melbourne during last week, Mr Cumming said.

He made the comments in response to a call by NRMA president Nicholas Whitlam earlier today
for the ACCC to investigate possible petrol profiteering following last week's petrol price
hike.

Oil companies blamed a doubling in the international crude oil price over the past two
months for the rise.

But consumer groups and politicians also pointed the finger at the big four of the
petroleum industry - Mobil, Shell, BP and Caltex - accusing them of profiteering.

Mr Whitlam said the increase in bowser prices had been as high as 10 cents a litre, with no
clear explanation for the hike.

"The price is an important issue for consumers, and for that reason the NRMA keenly
supports an investigation of recent price rises by the ACCC," he said.

But ACCC chairman Professor Allan Fels last week said there was virtually nothing that
could be done to rein in fuel prices, although he believed they had peaked.

He said the ACCC's main concern was possible collusion among the companies in setting
petrol prices.

State governments meanwhile have called for a federal inquiry into petrol prices.

TAS: Antarctic helicopter victims to be brought to Hobart

The bodies of three French expeditioners who were killed in an Antarctic helicopter crash
will be brought to Hobart next week.

They were killed early this week while flying from the supply ship L'Astrolabe to the
French Antarctic base at Dumont D'Urville.

Honorary French consul in Hobart BILL AYLIFFE says he has only sketchy details of the
tragedy, but understands there was an explosion during the short flight to the base.

The pilot, the chief mechanic and a third person were killed.

The L'Astrolabe, which is based in Hobart, is due back with the bodies next Wednesday or
Thursday.

Mr AYLIFFE says a service will be held on the ship after it docks before the bodies are
flown back to France.
